back from the hospital
So Michelle is back from the Hospital this afternoon… wait, maybe I should back up.
Sunday evening, during the drive home from a weekend at my folks Michelle wasn’t feelin’ so hot. If you’ve been in the car with Michelle, you know she prone to getting motion sick after only about 500 feet. We got home and she decided to skip dinner and go straight to bed; I went up couple hours later.
Michelle, being the person she is, kept the fact that she was awake and not-feeling-so-comfortable, still after the car ride, to herself. Over the course of the night, the discomfort turned to acute pain and by 5:30am it was enough for her to wake me. Me, in my sleep-addled state, took a bit to figure out that she was in a considerable amount of pain and that she didn’t “eat too much broccoli” (or some other cute euphemism) and that there was an actual problem… At that point, “we’re going to the emergency room” were the best seven words she’d ever heard.
Two moderately uncomfortable tests that “she never wants to do again”, me putting my “to be smacked” tally well into double digits due to poor attempts at levity with bad jokes, being asked “are you sure you couldn’t be pregnant” a half a dozen times and a nearly 10 hour wait in the emergency room later, Chel was admitted with appendicitis.
Surgery wound up being a surprise. That is, the surgical nurses showing up mid interview surprised the charge/ward nurse; she wasn’t expecting them for a few more hours at least. 5pm, she’s wheeled away; 40 minutes later, the surgeon wanders out to the waiting area and gives me the verbal ‘thumbs-up’. Basically, her recovery time lasted longer than the actual surgery. The surgeon was able to perform the appendectomy laproscopicly without complication. Later, she was awake and happily talking to her mum, Kim, who arrived in Santa Cruz around 9pm.
This morning she was so happy and chipper, more than one nurse did a triple-take, disbelieving that her surgery was only yesterday evening.
Long story short, she came home this evening and she’s on a no heavy lifting restriction for a while, but other than that she’s happy and doing well.
UPDATE 2008-09-02
Chel’s back to work this morning; happy-drugs are really quite good at making pain go away so ppl can be functional. Still on a no heavy-exertion restriction, though…
And she’s got a blog post about it too.
